3 suicide attacks thwarted in Kirkuk

An Iraqi special operations unit conducted a pre-emptive operation that led to thwarting three suicide attacks in Kirkuk province, the interior ministry said on Monday (January 22nd).

"The Federal Police’s intelligence unit arrested three terrorists in Kirkuk operating for the 'Islamic State of Iraq and Syria' (ISIS) as part of the so-called 'suicide bombers platoon'," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan said in a statement.

Explosive vests were found in their possession, he said, adding that they were planning on using them in separate operations in the province.

"The [security] operation was carried out by a specialised intelligence team after monitoring the targets and their movements, and then arresting them," he said.
