ISIL leader killed in coalition airstrike in Mosul

An "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) leader was killed in an international coalition airstrike in Mosul Wednesday (February 8th), the Kurdish region's security council said in a statement.

"Senior ISIL leader Walid Sarhan al-Kurdi, also known as Abu Ali al-Kurdi, was killed in an international coalition airstrike in Mosul," the council said.

"Al-Kurdi was ISIL's 'sharia' official in Tall Kayf, north of Mosul. He was residing in western Mosul, and was killed on Wednesday afternoon when he and four aides were targeted by a coalition fighter jet in al-Zanjili neighbourhood in Mosul," it said.

He was one of the few remaining Kurdish elements in ISIL's ranks after most of them were killed in confrontations, either with the Kurdish forces in Iraq or on the other side of the border in Syria, the statement said.
