Iraqi forces mount large-scale search operation in Mosul desert

Iraqi forces kicked off a large-scale operation in Ninawa province, which will cover the Mosul desert, in search of "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) pockets, the Ninawa Operations Command said Thursday (June 28th).

Forces from the Iraqi army, police and paramilitary forces, supported by the Iraqi Air Force, are taking part in the operation, Commander Nejim Eddin Karim al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

They will search and clear more than 54,000 square kilometres of desert areas and farmlands of ISIS remnants, he said.

"We are cracking down on remaining ISIS cells and their underground tunnels to deny them any chance to regroup or pose any danger to our liberated cities," he said.
