Syrian ISIS leader killed in Mosul operation

A senior Syrian "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) leader was killed in an operation by the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) in western Mosul, the Ninawa Operations Command said Wednesday (May 10th).

CTS special operations forces on Tuesday night "carried out a carefully-planned operation targeting Abu Ayoub al-Shami, a senior ISIS leader serving as the military commander of ISIS cells in western Mosul", operations commander Lt. Gen. Abdul Ameer Rashid Yarallah told Diyaruna.

Al-Shami and six of his aides were killed, Yarallah said.

"The army has also fully retaken al-Maamel residential neighbourhood", he added.

"The ongoing operations on Wednesday are aimed at forcing ISIS elements to withdraw towards the Tigris River and not to barricade themselves among civilians," he said.
