ISIL defences crumbling in Mosul battle

Joint Iraqi forces have retaken most of al-Toub and al-Baydh neighbourhoods in western Mosul, as "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) defences keep crumbling in the areas that are still under the group's control, Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said Friday (April 21st).

"Battles are ongoing amid major collapse among ISIL fighters," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"We have killed 17 terrorists and destroyed several vehicles packed with explosives, together with a weapons and ammunition cache," he said.

Iraqi troops advanced on Friday by three kilometres inside al-Baydh and al-Toub neighbourhoods, he said, adding that they have penetrated the terrorists’ defences in al-Maamel and al-Seha neighbourhoods.

"Meanwhile, we have set up a second floating bridge to facilitate the movement of citizens from combat zones to liberated areas in the east of city," he added.
