A suicide bomber killed at least 34 people Monday (October 3rd) in an attack targeting a wedding party in the north-eastern Syrian province of al-Hasakeh, AFP reported.
The bomber blew himself up inside a hall in Tall Tawil village during the wedding of a member of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the local Kurdish government said.
The SDF is an Arab-Kurdish coalition battling the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in northern Syria.
ISIL claimed the attack, saying that one of its fighters had fired on a gathering near al-Hasakeh city before blowing himself up.
A witness named Ahmad, who was wounded in the blast, described the moment the bomber struck.
"As the bride and groom were exchanging their vows I saw a man wearing a thick black jacket pass beside me," he said.
"I thought he looked strange and a few seconds later there was an enormous explosion.
"People had fallen on the ground and I saw bodies torn to bits."
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gave a higher toll of 36 dead including 11 children.
Both the groom and bride were safe, but the groom's father and brother were killed in the attack, a relative told AFP.
Mohamed Kassar, a wedding singer, struggled to hold back tears as he described the aftermath of the attack.
"I am still in shock. They were children and women," he said.
