Turkey says Syria border region must be 'cleansed' of ISIL

Turkey said Monday (August 22nd) that "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) fighters must be totally pushed out of the Syrian border region, after a weekend suicide bombing in Gaziantep left at least 54 dead, AFP reported.

"Our border must be completely cleansed from ISIL," Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, describing the group as a "terrorist organisation".

"We will fight ISIL to the end and continue to support countries and forces fighting them," he said.

A child suicide bomber, aged "between 12 and 14", is suspected of carrying out the attack on a wedding in Gaziantep late Saturday on the orders of ISIL, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The bride and groom were rushed to hospital but were not seriously wounded, while 66 people were still in hospital on Monday, 14 of them in serious condition.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon decried the bombing and called for swift punishment for the perpetrators, stressing "the need to intensify regional and international efforts to prevent and combat terrorism and violent extremism".
