Turkey sends more tanks across Syria border

Turkey on Thursday (August 25th) sent a new contingent of tanks and armoured vehicles into Syria, a day after a Turkish-led offensive expelled the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) from a border town it had held since 2013, AFP reported.

The tanks joined those which crossed the frontier on Wednesday as part of Operation Euphrates Shield, which aims to rid the northern Syrian border area of ISIL fighters.

The offensive has expelled ISIL from the Syrian town of Jarabulus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday, with allied opposition fighters reporting that the group had retreated south to the town of al-Bab.

The operation has seen Turkish special forces deployed on the ground and Turkish and coalition fighter jets striking ISIL targets, supporting a ground offensive by Syrian opposition fighters who on Wednesday marched into Jarabulus and a neighbouring village after meeting little resistance.

The Hurriyet daily, citing military sources, said 100 ISIL fighters had been killed in the offensive.
