Turkey clears ISIL mines from Syria border town

Turkish military experts on Thursday (September 1st) cleared mines from the area around the Syrian town of Jarabulus, which was captured from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) last week, AFP reported.

Syrian opposition fighters, backed by Turkish aviation and tanks, took Jarabulus from ISIL in a lightning operation and are now in full control of the town.

The de-mining operation involved the use of at least a dozen controlled explosions, which created huge white-and-grey clouds of smoke and dust.

ISIL fighters are believed to have left large quantities of mines and explosives around Jarabulus, and operations to destroy them have been in progress since the capture of the town a week ago.
