Iraqi forces begin clearing Fallujah-Baghdad highway

Iraqi forces kicked off an operation to clear the international highway that links Baghdad to Fallujah of landmines and explosives following its liberation from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Anbar Operations Command said Friday (August 12th).

“Iraqi forces, represented by engineering units and the Interior Ministry’s tactical team, have kicked off an operation to remove landmines and explosives left behind by ISIL along wide swaths of the 40-kilometre international highway that links Fallujah to Baghdad,” Anbar Military Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Ismail al-Mahalawi told Diyaruna.

“There are perhaps two tonnes of explosives and landmines, and we are now removing them in a controlled manner,” he said.
