Iraqi forces in Fallujah prepare for returning families

Iraqi forces in Fallujah kicked off an operation to remove landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in preparation for returning families, the city's mayor Issa al-Sayer said Friday (July 15th).

“An army engineering division and the police’s anti-landmine regiment kicked off the operation on Friday after sophisticated detectors arrived,” al-Sayer told Al-Shorfa.

“Municipal departments will enter the town once the mission, which may take several weeks, has been completed to clean the town and restore water and electricity services,” he said.

“The goal is to expedite the return of families to Fallujah and bring back a sense of normalcy to their lives, as was the case before ISIL occupied it,” he said.
