Syria regime shelling kills 5 civilians: monitor

Artillery shelling by Syrian government forces Friday (November 2nd) killed eight people, including at least five civilians, in an area where a recent truce is to be enforced, AFP reported.

A de-militarised zone was announced by opposition backer Turkey and Syrian ally Russia in September to separate government troops from opposition fighters in their last major bastion in Idlib province and adjacent areas.

Shelling has continued intermittently, however, and Friday saw one of the worst bursts of violence since the deal was reached, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The shelling struck on the southeastern edge of Idlib province, near the town of Jarjanaz, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Eight people were killed in the bombardment, including a child and four other civilians, he said, adding that close to 20 other people were wounded.

At least seven civilians were killed in the de-militarised zone in similar circumstances on October 26th.
