Iraq has seized 76 large electric transformers and equipment set to be smuggled to Syria in al-Qaim and its desert in Anbar province, the Interior Ministry said Sunday (October 21st).
"The items -- electric transformers and equipment stolen from several [Iraqi] cities and warehouses -- were hidden in areas near the border to be smuggled into Syria," the ministry said in a statement.
Those involved in the crime were arrested, it said, noting that they admitted to hiding other transformers and equipment in al-Qaim's desert, which were seized.
The confiscated items include 76 electric transformers of different sizes and types, 135 high-voltage thermal insulators, two 70-litre plastic containers filled with transformer oil, two batteries, and oil filters for power plants, the statement said.
