Iraqi forces thwart infiltration attempt from Syria

Iraqi army forces foiled an attempt by a group of extremists to infiltrate into Iraq from Syria’s Albu Kamal, Iraq's Joint Operations Command said Friday (June 22nd).

"The army forces killed two 'Islamic State of Iraq and Syria' (ISIS) elements and forced seven others to retreat back into Syria," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

They also destroyed a four-wheel-drive vehicle loaded with weapons in the operation, he added.

"Initial investigations indicate the militants were planning to join terrorist pockets in Iraq’s desert and carry out operations inside Iraq," he said.

In a separate operation, security forces have arrested 11 terror suspects in al-Qaim, Akashat and Heet, Anbar Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi told Diyaruna Friday.

"The army seized several explosive vests, 16 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and several 82mm mortars, as well as various weapons and ammunition during the same operation," he said.
