"Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) fighters posing as liberating security forces killed at least 15 civilians who welcomed them in central Mosul, AFP reported Tuesday (April 25th).
Wearing police uniforms, they entered parts of the Old City on Monday pretending to be federal forces, as a way of checking the residents' reaction and sowing fear among the population, the Joint Operations Command and a local official said.
The Iraqi Defence Ministry’s War Media Cell said ISIL elements dressed as federal police personnel opened fire Monday at a number of civilians in the Old City who cheered their arrival, the Iraqi News website reported.
It said the deaths, which took place in areas under ISIL control, included children and women.
