100,000 civilians flee Mosul battle amid more gains for Iraqi forces

Nearly 100,000 people have poured out of west Mosul in less than three weeks as Iraqi forces continue to push further into the city, making more gains by the day against the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL).

Between February 25th and March 15th, more than 97,000 people have been displaced from west Mosul, the International Organisation for Migration said Wednesday (March 15th) on its official Twitter account.

The IOM also said that Iraqi government figures indicated a total of more than 116,000 people from west Mosul had gone through a screening site south of the city, AFP reported.

Men, women and children carrying their possessions sometimes walk for hours before arriving at a security forces checkpoint.

From there they can take buses or pickup trucks to camps after the men go through initial screening aimed at identifying those with ISIL ties.

On Wednesday, Iraqi forces supported by the international coalition liberated the Old Bridge area and Ras al-Khor on the Tigris River, Joint Operations Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"They also advanced towards the historical lighthouse and retaken the area around al-Nouri mosque where ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi delivered a speech after the city was occupied," Rasul said.

"We will probably announce the liberation of the mosque and the lighthouse very soon given the swift advance of our forces and collapse of ISIL cells," he added.
