Iraqi forces clear Heet island of war remnants

Iraqi forces kicked off a large operation to clear Heet island in western Anbar of all war remnants after its liberation earlier this week from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) .

"Iraqi army units and anti-explosives teams are taking part in a campaign to remove improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and landmines from Heet island areas, including al-Bakr, al-Zawya, al-Hawi and other villages," Ministry of Defence spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

Efforts also include rehabilitating services in co-operation with the state's service ministries, he said.

The operation is aimed at paving the way for the return of residents to their homes in no more than one month, Rasul said.
