Joint forces in Anbar make progress in anti-ISIL fight

Iraqi forces, backed by coalition warplanes, killed 21 "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) elements and destroyed several of the group's strongholds in Anbar province, an official at the Ministry of Defence said Monday (June 27th).

"Army, police and tribal forces on Monday at dawn launched a large-scale attack in al-Khalediya Island, east of Ramadi, to clear it of ISIL elements," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Al-Shorfa.

The ongoing operation led to the death of 21 ISIL elements, including 13 killed in international coalition airstrikes, he said, adding that three of ISIL's strongholds were also destroyed.
