ISIS kills 2 policemen in attack on Iraq oilfield

The "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) on Saturday (February 24th) killed two policemen guarding a northern Iraqi oil field, in a first attack on energy facilities since extremists were driven from the region's towns, AFP reported.

"A large number of ISIS terrorists attacked a post of the oil police force near well 43 in the Khabbaz oilfield [southern Kirkuk province], killing two and wounding a third," a security source said.

Iraqi forces announced the total defeat of ISIS in the country in December, but cells of extremists remain behind and have continued to carry out bloody attacks.

The income from oil is vital for Iraq, OPEC's second biggest producer, as the country needs tens of billions of dollar to rebuild after the devastating fight against ISIS.
