Iraqi forces gain ground, deliver aid in Ninawa

Iraqi forces recaptured al-Falah 2 neighbourhood one day after retaking al-Falah 1 in eastern Mosul, a senior Iraqi military commander said Wednesday (December 14th).

"I am now talking to you from al-Falah 2 neighbourhood which our forces have liberated from the 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL)," Ninawa Operations Commander Nejim Eddin Karim al-Jubury told Diyaruna by phone.

The army is now securing its positions and providing aid to local residents, he said.

"Army forces have controlled the street that leads to Prophet Yunus shrine east of Mosul, and we hope to continue to make progress in the next few days," he said.

Meanwhile, Iraqi authorities are distributing aid to displaced families in camps in Ninawa province, the Ministry of Migration and Displacement said Wednesday.

"The ministry’s field teams have distributed 9,000 relief packages in al-Khazer, Jadaa, al-Madraj and Hassan Sham 2 camps, and have provided 60,000 litres of white oil and 3,000 gas cylinders to families in liberated residential neighbourhoods of eastern Mosul, including Aden, al-Bakr, al-Eelam and Shaqaq al-Khadhra," the ministry said in a statement.

"Relief operations and aid are under way in co-operation with the UN and other international organisations," it said.
