Syria regime urges opposition to quit Aleppo

The Syrian military on Tuesday (November 22nd) urged opposition fighters to pull out of east Aleppo and allow civilians to leave as well, AFP reported.

The move came as regime and allied forces pushed forward inside opposition-held Aleppo on Tuesday, prompting civilians to flee.

A week into the latest round of fighting for the city, regime troops have taken control of a third of the eastern neighbourhood of Masaken Hanano, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Regime and allied troops backed by Hizbullah were battling opposition fighters on several fronts inside opposition-held districts, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The Syrian army, which has besieged the east for months, demanded that opposition fighters distribute food to civilians, while calling on residents to co-operate with its advancing troops.

The military airdropped leaflets with a picture of a green bus like those used to transport civilians and opposition fighters from areas retaken by the regime.

"To those involved in carrying weapons, we stretch out our hand to you. Reserve your place before it is too late," the leaflets read.

On Monday, UN humanitarian chief Stephen O'Brien condemned the use of sieges in Syria, saying nearly one million people across the country were under blockades, most imposed by the regime.
