Fighting shakes Aleppo as ceasefire expires

Clashes and airstrikes shook the Syrian city of Aleppo on Sunday (October 23rd), leaving three civilians dead, as heavy fighting resumed after the end of a three-day ceasefire, AFP reported.

The ceasefire ended without any evacuations by the UN, which had hoped to bring wounded civilians out of the opposition-held east and deliver aid after weeks of regime bombardment and a three-month siege.

Airstrikes and artillery fire hit eastern districts of Aleppo after heavy clashes overnight Saturday along the front line dividing the city's regime-held west from the east, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday.

According to the Observatory, at least three civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed in rocket strikes targeting an opposition-held area, warning that with several people wounded the death toll could rise.

The ceasefire had been intended to allow civilians and opposition fighters to leave the east.

The regime opened eight evacuation corridors, but only a handful of civilians were reported to have crossed through a single passage.
