Syria meeting breaks up without plan to restore truce

A high-level international meeting on the crisis in Syria broke up Thursday (September 22nd) without agreement on a way to revive a collapsed truce brokered by the US and Russia, AFP reported.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and envoys from the other 21 nations of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) are in New York for the UN General Assembly.

The US diplomat said he was ready to meet Lavrov again on Friday to see if anything could be done.

But the UN peace envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, was downbeat, calling it a "long, painful and disappointing meeting".

In Aleppo, missiles rained down on opposition-held areas as the regime prepared a ground offensive to retake the city.

Nearly 30 civilians, including several children, were killed and dozens wounded in the air raids, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
