Syria chemical probe set to present findings

A yearlong investigation to determine who is behind deadly chemical attacks in Syria takes centre stage at the UN this week when the 24-member panel presents its findings, AFP reported Tuesday (August 23rd).

The Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) set up by the UN Security Council has been collecting evidence in nine cases of alleged gas attacks on Syrian villages in 2014 and 2015.

The report will be presented on Wednesday to the council, which will then discuss the findings at an August 30th meeting.

The panel is looking into nine attacks on seven villages in the Hama, Idlib and Aleppo provinces.

The "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) is suspected of using mustard gas on Marea in Aleppo in August 2015.
