Iraq rehabilitates Fallujah Bridge

Iraq has finished rehabilitating the Fallujah Bridge on the Euphrates River, after it had been destroyed by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) during the liberation operations, Fallujah's local council announced Monday (June 25th).

"[Iraqi] technical and engineering units, supported by [a grant from] the UN Development Programme, have completed the rehabilitation of the Fallujah Bridge," council spokesman Salam al-Halbusi said during a press conference.

The rehabilitation of the bridge comes as part of a plan drawn up by the local government in co-ordination with humanitarian organisations to reconstruct Fallujah and rehabilitate infrastructure damaged in terrorist operations, he said.

"The bridge will be officially reopened in the coming days," he said, noting that rehabilitation work was delayed because ISIS had rigged the bridge gates at the bottom of the river with explosives.

The Iraqi government had to hire a foreign company to defuse the explosives, he noted.
