Iraqi forces crack down on ISIS in Anbar

A new military operation has kicked off with support from the international coalition to crack down on "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) remnants in the area between Haditha, north of the Euphrates, and the Mosul desert, the Anbar Operations Command said on Monday (July 16th).

"Iraqi forces, represented by the army, Counter-Terrorism Service and tribal forces, supported by international coalition warplanes, have kicked off an operation to comb 200 kilometres of desert areas, villages and valleys between Ninawa province and al-Haditha, western Anbar," commander Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi told Diyaruna.

"Information indicates that ISIS cells and terrorists are taking advantage of the area terrain to hide and regroup, which prompted the Iraqi forces to launch the operation," he said.

A hideout containing various weapons was found, and an underground tunnel was destroyed to prevent terrorists from re-using it, he added.
