More than 250 landmines dismantled in Ninawa

Iraqi mine clearing teams have removed and dismantled more than 250 landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in various areas of Ninawa province, the Ninawa Operations Command said Thursday (September 26th).

"We have been conducting large-scale sweeps of al-Qahtaniya, Sinjar and Rabia to prepare those areas for the return of their displaced population," commander Maj. Gen. Numan al-Zawbaie told Diyaruna.

The army and mine clearing teams operating with the UN mission in Iraq have dismantled and detonated more than 250 locally-made landmines and IEDs which the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) had planted before its defeat.

"We will continue to remove explosive ordnance and the terrorist group’s remnants of war until all those areas are cleared and their residents can safely return," he said.
