Iraq's Joint Operations Command announced Wednesday (September 25th) that its forces have destroyed two "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) tunnels in western Anbar on the Iraqi-Syrian border.
The tunnels were used for moving terrorists and smuggling weapons between the two countries, it said.
"One of the two tunnels, located between Iraq’s Husayba and eastern Albu Kamal in Syria, is more than 1,600 metres long," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.
The army backfilled large sections of the tunnels with concrete to prevent the group from re-using them, he said.
"Weapons and explosives found at one of the tunnels were also seized," he said, noting that a unit from the Iraqi army’s 1st intelligence division, infantry and border guard forces took part in the operation.
