Senior ISIS element arrested in Ninawa
A wanted "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element who had served as a senior official at the group's "soldiers affairs office" in Ninawa has been arrested, the Iraqi police in Ninawa province said Thursday (September 5th).
A two-week long security operation that involved monitoring, information collection and reconnaissance "has led to the arrest of Ali Nassar at a residential building in southern Mosul", Ninawa police chief Brig. Gen. Hamad Namis al-Jubury told Diyaruna.
Nassar had shaved his beard and was carrying a fake ID, he said.
"The terrorist is involved in heinous operations targeting civilians and security forces," al-Jubury said, adding that Nassar was responsible for planting explosives on roads and bridges to slow the advance of the army during the Mosul liberation battles in 2017.
Mosul residents helped identify and locate Nassar, "who would leave the building only after sunset to avoid detection", al-Jubury said.
