Iraqi forces dismantle ISIS cell in Ninawa

An "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) terror cell in Ninawa province has been dismantled after weeks of monitoring, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Tuesday (August 27th).

"A force from the Iraqi army’s intelligence agency dismantled a terror cell and arrested all of its members in southern al-Qayyarah and Sumar neighbourhood in eastern Mosul," the ministry said in a statement.

The cell members "used both eastern and western Mosul for their movements to deceive our forces and make it difficult for them to penetrate the cell", the ministry said.

"Several members admitted to having taken part in a number of terrorist operations in the province," it said.

One cell member was responsible for stealing oil from al-Qayyarah refinery and smuggling it to ISIS in Syria, while another was in charge of digging trenches and tunnels, it said.

Other members hid among the displaced population at al-Hol camp, it added.
