ISIS element who destroyed monuments at Mosul Museum arrested

The "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element responsible for destroying monuments at the Mosul Museum has been arrested in western Mosul, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said Tuesday (August 27th).

"A joint force from the Ninawa police directorate arrested an ISIS militant who admitted to having destroyed and damaged artefacts at the Mosul Museum," the ministry said in a statement.

The detainee had appeared in an ISIS video during the group’s control of Mosul, carrying an iron hammer and destroying Assyrian statues at the museum, it said.

He was arrested in Tal al-Rumman neighbourhood of western Mosul, it said.
