ISIS element involved in major attacks arrested in Najaf

An "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element who had taken part in bombings and attacks that killed hundreds of people in several Iraqi provinces has been apprehended in Najaf, the Iraqi police said Thursday (July 25th).

"In a high-level operation, the Falcons Intelligence Cell arrested Badr Faris Mutliq al-Zakruti, a terrorist who had taken part in many major attacks, including the 2017 attack on Fadak restaurant in al-Nasiriyah," it said.

The attack killed 84 people and wounded 93 others.

"Al-Zakruti has operated as part of [ISIS's] 'Southern Province' and 'Anbar Province', where he handled tasks related to the transfer of suicide bombers and vehicles," the statement said.

"He was taken to a security detention facility pending his referral to court," it added.
