Iraqi police foil attempt to smuggle drugs from Iran

Iraqi police at the Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran have foiled an attempt to smuggle large quantities of drugs into the country, Iraqi police in Basra province said Thursday (May 23rd).

“Security forces seized 23,000 narcotic pills and about 1,900 grammes of crude cannabis in the possession of a [vehicle] passenger," said Col. Mohammed Nadhum al-Fatlawi of the Customs Police Directorate in Shalamcheh.

The passenger had been attempting to smuggle the drugs into Iraq "inside two boxes containing foods and frozen chicken”, he told Diyaruna.

Police seized the items, arrested the passenger and referred him to court, he said, noting that this is the second smuggling operation to be foiled this week.
