Iraqi forces search 230 kilometres of land along Syria border

A security operation covering 230 kilometres of land along the Iraq-Syria border to search for militants’ hideouts and underground tunnels has been completed, Iraq's Joint Operations Command said Thursday (May 2nd).

"Joint Iraqi forces, supported by international coalition warplanes, completed an operation that kicked off last Saturday to search 230 kilometres of precarious areas along the Syria border," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

Twelve underground tunnels and hideouts and three weapon caches were found, and three suspects were arrested during the operation, he said.

"The operations, extending from the al-Qaim-Albu Kamal pivot, through Husayba al-Gharbiya towards Beyar Ali near the Syria border, involved setting up control and surveillance towers to provide that border area with greater security against terrorist threats," he said.

Another campaign will kick off in the next few days to search and clear other areas along the border, Rasul said.
