New operation kicks off between Fallujah, Samarra

Iraqi forces on Friday (March 29th) kicked off a new military operation to search desert areas between Fallujah and Samarra for "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) remnants.

"The operation is supported by international coalition warplanes and aims to crack down on ISIS remnants and cells," Anbar Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi told Diyaruna.

The operation, launched based on prior intelligence obtained by Iraqi forces, covers some 60,000 kilometres starting in Fallujah in Anbar province, through Thiraa Dejla and al-Tharthar, all the way to Samarra in Salaheddine province, he said.

"Army forces from the Anbar and Salaheddine operations commands are taking part in the operation which complements prior joint efforts to clear those areas of ISIS remnants, weapons and explosives caches," he said.
