Iraqi army seizes ISIS weapons cache near Syria border

The Iraqi army has seized a large weapons and explosives cache belonging to the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) in al-Qaim in western Anbar, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Tuesday (March 12th).

"The Iraqi army’s 8th Division located a large weapons and ammunition cache in al-Qaim, near the international border with Syria," the ministry said, citing a statement by the Military Intelligence Directorate.

The cache contained 120mm mortars, large quantities of ammunition, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), landmines, shoulder-mounted RPGs, and light and medium weapons, it said.

The underground cache, dug by ISIS, also contained wires and remote detonators, the statement said.

"All these materials were destroyed on site, and the cache was backfilled," it said.
