Oil smuggling network busted in Basra

A six-member oil smuggling network has been busted in Basra province, the Iraqi police announced Monday (March 4th).

"Security forces on Monday afternoon busted the biggest network involved in smuggling oil and its derivatives in Basra," a security source said.

"All the network members were arrested and seven tankers loaded with oil and set for smuggling were seized," the source said, noting that police also identified the site from where oil was being stolen and all those who collaborated with the smuggling network.

"Four fake stamps, including two belonging to the Oil Products Company, were seized, as well as stamped and signed blank documents and letters in the name of the Basra local council and an energy company," the source said.

The defendants were referred to court according to article 3 of the penal code on charges of smuggling oil and its derivatives.
