Iraqi forces thwart ISIS attack on Salaheddine oil refinery

Iraqi security forces have foiled a terror attack by "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements against the Salaheddine oil refinery, the Salaheddine police command said Monday (February 25th).

"Gunmen opened fire on Monday on the gate of the Salaheddine oil refinery in south-eastern Tikrit and on the facility's security personnel," Salaheddine police chief Maj. Gen. Qandeel al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

The attackers were repelled, and three of them -- including one wearing an explosive vest -- were killed, he said, noting that a special force has been formed to pursue the other attackers who fled towards the Makhoul mountains.

"A four-wheel-drive vehicle was also destroyed in the operation," he said.

"The terrorists are ISIS members," he said, adding that the three killed elements have been identified.
