Iraqi forces thwart ISIS infiltration attempt from Syria

The Iraqi Border Guard has foiled an infiltration attempt by six "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements from Syria into Iraq early Tuesday (October 30th).

The six elements tried to cross the border's security barrier, Border Guard Command’s 3rd District spokesman Lt. Col. Ahmed Naji told Diyaruna.

They opened fire on an Iraqi control tower, he said, which prompted the forces to respond, killing three of the infiltrators and forcing the other three back into Syrian territory.

This is the third infiltration attempt by ISIS this week, but they have all been foiled, Naji said, noting that two militants who tried to exploit the bad weather to cross the border were killed last Friday (October 26th).

"In another [infiltration] attempt last Sunday, a vehicle carrying terrorists was shelled by Iraqi helicopters," he added.
