ISIS attack thwarted in Kirkuk

The Iraqi police in Kirkuk province foiled an attack by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) on a checkpoint in al-Abbasi, southwest of Kirkuk, at a late hour Tuesday (September 25th).

Two terrorists were killed and six others were forced to flee, Col. Fadhel Hassan al-Obaidi of the Kirkuk police said.

"Security forces repelled an attack by ISIS gunmen who tried to storm a checkpoint and enter al-Abbasi at 11:30 pm last night," he told Diyaruna Wednesday.

The forces are now chasing the six elements who fled, with support from Iraqi army warplanes, he said.

"The killed ISIS terrorists were wanted elements," he said, noting that some of the others who took part in the attack have been identified and are currently being pursued.
