Ninawa police arrest 23 ISIS elements

Iraqi forces arrested 23 "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements in Ninawa province over the past two days, the Ministry of Interior said Tuesday (July 24th).

"The Ninawa police command is conducting an operation to enforce arrest warrants and has so far arrested 23 ISIS elements wanted according to article 4 of the anti-terrorism law," ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Saad Maan said in a statement.

The detainees include an ISIS element in charge of collecting zakat in southern Mosul, another in charge of the group's "state properties", and a third who had served as part of the "sharia office", he said.

ISIS fighters were also among the detained, as well as elements who had worked with the group's "hesba" (religious police) during its control of Mosul, he said.

"They were arrested in various areas of Mosul and its suburbs," Maan said.
