The Iraqi army has thwarted an infiltration attempt by five "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements across the Syrian border, killing two of them, the Anbar Operations Command said on Friday (July 13th).
"Army forces clashed with five militants who attempted to cross the border with Syria carrying shoulder-mounted RPGs and medium-sized weapons," commander Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi told Diyaruna.
"The militants refused to surrender after they entered Iraqi soil, and opened fire on the security forces, prompting the army to respond, killing two and arresting the other three," he said.
An investigation is underway to identify the militants and obtain any tips that could lead to other ISIS cells, he said.
