More than 10,000 ISIS, al-Qaeda extremists in Africa

Africa is home to more than 10,000 extremists from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the international coalition battling ISIS in Iraq and Syria heard Tuesday (June 26th).

"Within the framework of the evolution of the strategy of ISIS, Africa is among the most targeted zones," Morocco's foreign minister Nasser Bourita said during a meeting in Skhirat near the Moroccan capital Rabat.

The regional meeting, the first of its kind, brought together around 50 delegations, including 20 from the African continent, AFP reported.

Bourita called for co-operation between African countries and the global coalition to defeat ISIS, saying African countries have "much to learn" from the coalition.

The African continent suffers the most extremist attacks out of all regions or countries in the world, with the exception of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Bourita said during a briefing with Brett McGurk, US special presidential envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIS.

McGurk said the gathering allowed coalition members to share information that would prevent fighters from crossing borders and combat terrorism financing.

The focus of the meeting was "on trying to finish the job in Syria", he said, noting that the coalition has put forward nearly $90 million for reconstruction programmes in Syria and Iraq.
