Families flee as Syria regime bombards southern city

Syria's regime pounded opposition-held parts of the southern city of Daraa overnight, causing dozens of families to flee, AFP reported Monday (June 25th).

Regime helicopters dropped barrel bombs on opposition-held areas of Daraa city for the first time in a year, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Russia-backed regime forces have been preparing an offensive to oust opposition fighters from Syria's south. Regime forces ramped up their bombardment of Daraa's eastern countryside last Tuesday, and over the weekend, Russia bombarded it for the first time in a year.

Russian and regime aircraft continued to bomb eastern Daraa on Monday, the Observatory said.

The uptick in violence has killed at least 28 civilians in just under a week and has damaged two hospitals, the Observatory said, with rescue teams struggling to reach affected areas.

More than 17,000 civilians have been displaced from Daraa's eastern countryside, it added.

The UN has warned renewed hostilities could put 750,000 lives at risk.
