Iraqi forces hunt down ISIS remnants in Diyala

A large-scale military operation targeting "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) remnants in north-western Baqubah is now under way, Diyala Operations Commander Lt. Gen. Mizher al-Azzawi said Wednesday (May 30th).

“Iraqi forces early Wednesday launched a large-scale operation covering more than 80 kilometres to crack down on ISIS remnants and cells," al-Azzawi said.

The operation is being conducted in the area between Habhab al-Khalis, Hawdh al-Hashemiyat and Hawdh al-Hadid, he said, and south from there in the direction of the Hamrin Mountains.

“Iraqi air force warplanes are taking part in the operation to provide aerial support to the forces on the ground,” he said.

The purpose of the operation is to hunt down and eliminate remaining pockets of ISIS fighters and to seize weapons and explosives in that area, he said.
