Damascus shelling, car bomb blast kill 2

A car bomb and shellfire in the Syrian capital of Damascus killed two people and wounded several others on Wednesday (May 9th), AFP reported.

State television reported "two killed and 14 wounded" when a shell struck Damascus Tower in the central Marjeh Square district and a car bomb went off in Maysat Square in the north-east of the city.

The blast came as regime forces battle to oust "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) fighters from the southern districts of the capital, including Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp and adjacent al-Hajar al-Aswad.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS fighters have previously targeted the capital in recent weeks.

"ISIS in southern Damascus has fired rockets intermittently on the capital" since April 19th, when pro-regime forces ramped up their fight against the group, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.
