Anbar police kick off search operation in rural areas

Iraqi police forces in Anbar have launched search operations in villages and rural areas of the province to ensure there are no remaining "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements.

"Security forces kicked off an operation to comb villages, rural areas, privately-owned farms and dense orchards in search of terrorist hideouts, weapons or explosives," Anbar police chief Maj. Gen. Hadi Kassar Erzaij told Diyaruna on Tuesday (March 6th).

The campaign aims at preventing ISIS from returning or regrouping, he said.

"Weapons and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found and six wanted individuals were arrested on the first day of the operation," he said.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced Tuesday that 581 displaced people have returned home to al-Qaim in western Anbar.

"About 90 families, or 503 people, have returned home from al-Khalediya, al-Habbaniya and Kilo 18 camps to al-Qaim," the ministry said in a statement.

"Fourteen displaced families, or about 78 people, have also returned home from al-Dora camp in Baghdad to their original areas in al-Qaim," it said, noting that the families were transported free of charge on buses and trucks provided by the ministry.
