US envoy calls on allies to keep fighting ISIS

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday (February 13th) called on allies to keep fighting the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) saying the end of major combat did not mean "enduring defeat" of the extremists, AFP reported.

Tillerson spoke at a ministerial meeting in Kuwait of the military coalition that has been fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

"ISIS is failing but the end of major combat operations does not mean we have achieved the enduring defeat of ISIS," Tillerson said.

"ISIS remains a serious threat to the stability of the region, our homelands and other parts of the globe," he said.

Iraq declared victory over ISIS in December, but the group still has a presence in Syria.

Tillerson said the US would maintain an "ISIS-focused military presence in Syria" and "continue to train local security forces".
