Iraqi forces arrest senior ISIS element in Baghdad

A senior "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element who had escaped from Badoosh prison in 2014 was arrested as he tried to cross an army checkpoint north of Baghdad, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Friday (January 19th).

"In co-ordination with the local police in the capital Baghdad, a military force from the Intelligence Directorate set up a carefully-planned ambush and arrested a terrorist who had escaped from Badoosh prison," the ministry said in a statement.

The detainee was trying to cross al-Abaiji checkpoint at one of Baghdad's entrances, it said.

"The terrorist was trying to enter the capital when he was arrested," the statement added, noting that he is being questioned now.
