Old Mosul reconstruction to start early 2018

Operations to reconstruct and rehabilitate Mosul’s Old City are scheduled to kick off early 2018 as part of a UN-led effort, Ninawa provincial council chief Bashar al-Kiki said Thursday (December 28th).

"The UN Development Programme has contracted two local companies to reconstruct markets, rehabilitate houses and remove debris and bodies of victims from Mosul’s Old City by the beginning of 2018," al-Kiki said at a press conference Thursday.

The two companies will clean the streets and houses in the Mosul market and Bab al-Saray areas, as well as the area around the middle school, the corniche, the Ghazi and Khaled ibn al-Walid streets.

They also will rehabilitate houses so their owners can return to them, al-Kiki said.

"Local agencies will help the two companies in this mission, in addition to the military engineering and civil defence units," he said.
